MyEdinburgh Social Innovation Challenge
The MyEdinburgh Social Innovation Challenge, in partnership with Bright Red Triangle Napier University was one of the clearest examples this year of MyEdinburgh’s role as a bridge between universities, students, community organisations and civic partners.
Running over 8 weeks in May and June, the programme was planned around four geographical areas of Edinburgh: North East, North West, South East and South West. Each team was encouraged to explore a live community issue, engage with relevant organisations or community assets, and develop a practical response that could improve awareness, access, participation or support.
The structure of the programme included an introductory session on social innovation, team formation by Edinburgh district, community research and validation, and a final showcase. Session 7 included a reflective walk up Calton Hill, helping students view their districts in the wider city context and consider what community partners had identified as important. Team 4 also spent a day volunteering with their community partner, The Caley at Saughton Park, strengthening the connection between research, participation and practical understanding.

BENCHES: A Free Neurodivergent Audio‑Visual Exhibition at the Bakery, Fringe Venue 104, 12th to 16th August 10am to 5pm
BENCHES has provided a strong example of MyEdinburgh’s role in supporting creative, inclusive and community-facing activity.
As a photographic exhibition celebrating neurodivergent creativity, BENCHES aligns closely with MyEdinburgh’s commitment to inclusion, visibility and community participation. Supporting this initiative has helped show how the Bakery can be used not only for meetings and events, but as a welcoming public-facing space for creativity, storytelling and civic connection.
The project also created opportunities to involve volunteers, welcome members of the public and strengthen MyEdinburgh’s reputation as a space where creative and community-led work can be supported. MyEdinburgh will host BENCHES’ third Exhibition as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – Free events. The previous two were held in London and Plymouth.
